Framed Otomi Hand Embroidery Black & White Textile

Framed Otomi Hand Embroidery Black & White Textile

$750.00

Animals have always been a theme that the Otomi celebrate. Either on cotton or linen - intricate patterns of animals and flora take over the "canvas" and create a beautiful graphic tableau of designs that have become synonymous with a quintessential symbolism of harmony with the natural environment.

Made by Otomi women in the Tenango Valley of Hidalgo, Mexico, this graphic black embroidered textile is embellished with stunning, graphic animal characters and crisp shapes. Commonly known as tenangos, this style of embroidery (the false satin stitch) can be traced back to pre Aztec Meso-America with the symbolism, iconography and color ways of the pieces reflecting the time-honored traditions and beliefs of the Otomi people. Traditional designs featured on Otomi textiles are said to originate from prehistoric wall paintings located in the Tenango region.

The black and white Tenango embroidered textile is carefully applied to a linen substrate and floats one inch above a flax linen-covered mat that extends to the side panels of the frame. Paired with a simple and elegant black wood frame, it is ready to be displayed in your favorite part of the home or office.
